There is no cure for tinnitus, the medical term for ringing in the ears, according to the American Tinnitus Association. However, managing tinnitus is often possible by treating the underlying cause.
Treatment outcomes for tinnitus vary based on factors such as what caused the condition in the first place and the length of time since onset, says the American Tinnitus Association. Tinnitus is often caused by age-related hearing loss, exposure to loud sounds, earwax blockage and ear bone changes, according to Mayo Clinic. While long-term exposure to loud noises carries a risk of causing permanent damage, tinnitus caused by short-term exposure to loud sounds usually goes away on its own.
