Although the exact origins of curling are unknown, it is assumed that curling was invented in Scotland in the 16th century. According to the World Curling Federation, 16th century paintings depict people playing a game similar to curling.
The first written evidence of curling was written in Latin by a Scottish notary in the year 1540. In its early days, this sport was played on frozen lakes and ponds. Eventually, the first official curling club was formed in Scotland during the 19th century. It was also during this time that curling made its way to the United States and other countries.
