What is a Customs Declaration Form?

A customs declaration form is a document international travelers must complete that lists all articles they have brought to or intend to leave in the United States. Travelers complete the form upon arrival and give it to a U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer for approval.
A duty or tax on the articles is then determined by the Customs and Border Protection officer. U.S. residents generally receive a tax exemption of up to $800 worth of items brought back with them. Non-residents typically receive a $100 tax exemption. All travelers pay the current rate duty on the first $1000 above the exemption amount.
