What is a cyclic acetal?

A cyclic acetal is an organic compound that consists of an acetal carbon and either one or two oxygen atoms in a ring formation. These compounds are considered to be organic because they contain carbon.

Cyclic acetals are in the acetal family in organic chemistry. Acetals are compounds that contain a central carbon. A hydrogen molecule, two oxygen molecules and an alkyl or an aryl compound is typically connected to the carbon. The oxygen molecules typically also have alkyl compounds connected to them.

Acetals can be linear or cyclical. They also may be known as a hemiacetal if one of the oxygens is connected to a hydrogen instead of an alkyl group.
