What are some dangers of DMSO?

While the most frequent effects of DMSO, or dimethyl sulfoxide, include upset stomach, skin irritation and a strong garlic odor, more serious dangers include severe allergic reactions, headaches, and itching and burning when applied to the skin, warns WebMD. The topical agent can also cause deadly reactions in high concentrations.
When penetrating the skin, DMSO may also interact and interfere with other medications, and can result in the absorption of other unhealthy substances, warns Healthline. In addition to a garlic odor coming from the skin, DMSO can also cause a strong garlic-like taste in the mouth for several hours after application.
