What are some of the dangers of eating maltodextrin?

Adverse effects of maltodextrin consumption include an increase in insulin production and subsequent rise in blood sugar levels, according to Integrative Wellness Centers. This is due to maltodextrin having a glycemic index of 130, compared to table sugar's glycemic index of 65.

Maltodextrin is commonly found in products marketed as low-fat, no- or low-sugar and diet foods, as it provides less calories than regular table sugar, as Integrative Wellness Centers notes. However, since it has a higher glycemic index, it causes a more rapid spike in blood sugar levels and increased insulin output. Insulin is a growth hormone, so this can lead to hormone abnormalities in men and women. Such abnormalities include irregular and/or heavy periods, increased facial hair growth and feelings of irritability.
