Greek mythology lists Rhode and Benthesikyme as the daughters of Poseidon and his wife, Amphitrite. Poseidon had numerous offspring with other creatures from mythological lore, but only two daughters and one son with his wife.

Greek mythology portrays Poseidon as a god with a wandering eye. His affair with Medusa, the mythological woman famous for having snakes for her hair, led to the births of both Pegasus and Chrysaor. He also fathered offspring with the goddesses Demeter, Gaia and Aphrodite.

Depending on the version of the myth, some Greek mythology authors attribute the birth of Rhode to Poseidon's lover, Aphrodite, who also bore him Herophile. The majority of Greek mythology does recognize that Rhode was the daughter of Poseidon's wife, Amphitrite, and suggests that Amphitrite's jealous rages over her husband's affairs transformed many beautiful women into monsters.
