What is DD-WRT?

DD-WRT is Linux-based aftermarket firmware designed for use with a range of different wireless routers. DD-WRT includes many features not typically present in the default firmware of most routers, such as the ability to convert a router into a Wi-Fi hotspot and advanced options for quality of service.
DD-WRT was originally designed for use with Linksys-branded routers, but has since branched out to support routers from other popular manufacturers. Earlier versions of DD-WRT were based on the Alchemy firmware, designed by the software company Sveasoft, while newer versions are mostly rewritten from scratch.
Popular alternatives offering functionality similar to DD-WRT include FreeWRT, OpenWrt, Tomato Firmware and Sveasoft.
