The depth of water canals in Venice can vary, but the Grand Canal is about 16 feet deep. The Grand Canal is the main canal that passes through Venice and is in the shape of a letter "S." It is 2.36 miles long and 100 to 300 feet wide.
According to the Daily Mail, Venice is facing some tough decisions about the usage of the canals in this ancient city due to the dangers presented by large ships entering the canals. The residents and lobbyists claim that the nature of the canals and the structure of the city is changing due to large cruise ships that enter on daily basis. As of 2014, cruise ships are still allowed to enter the Grand Canal.
