What is the definition of synthesis?

Synthesis generally refers to the combining of multiple elements into a single entity or compound. While synthesis sometimes results naturally, scientists in many fields perform synthesis as part of experimentation, solution development or product creation.

Scientific expressions convey the different elements and relative amounts in certain compounds. The expression H2O, for water, indicates that one molecule of water has two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. Synthesis is the opposite of analysis, where a combination or compound is broken down into its different elements. Chemists mix different ingredients and elements using synthesis to come up with new formulas for items such as medicines and cosmetics.
