"Degenerated disc" is a term used to describe the natural deterioration of the discs in the spine due to the aging process, according to WebMD. The term "degenerative disc disease" is also used interchangeably to describe the same condition.
Soft discs in the spine cushion and separate the vertebrae. Over time, normal wear and tear on the spine causes these discs to break down, which in turn leaves the spine vulnerable and causes severe back pain. According to WebMD, degenerative discs can also be caused by sudden injury to the spine or repetitive heavy, physical work. People who smoke or are obese also have a higher risk of developing degenerative disc disease.
