There are many science degrees a person can obtain in order to become an oceanographer. Some of the disciplines within the study of oceanography include marine biology, marine geology, geophysics, marine chemistry, physical oceanography and biological oceanography. All of these specialties fall under the broad field of oceanography.

Someone interested in oceanography can earn a bachelor's, master's or doctorate-level degree and work in this field. Many universities in the United States have programs allowing students to study in these areas and earn a degree that prepares them to work as oceanographers. Researchers, teachers and ship's crewmen are also important positions within the field of oceanography.
