The primary dental devices used to treat obstructive sleep apnea are the mandibular advancement device, or MAD, and the tongue retaining device, according to WebMD. Dental devices are most effective with a patient who suffers from mild to moderate apnea and who sleeps on his back or stomach.

Dental devices can control sleep apnea much longer than treatment through surgery, according to WebMD. However, they may cause hypersalivation, pain, dry lips and an altered bite. The most effective treatment for sleep apnea is the continuous positive airway pressure, or CPAP, that uses a small lightweight machine that a patient may carry around with him.
