How do I descale a washing machine?

To descale a washing machine, pour 1 cup of white vinegar into the drum, then let the empty washing machine run through one cycle with two rinses. Wipe the interior with a washcloth, then allow the machine to dry overnight.
- Empty the washing machine
Make sure that your washing machine is completely empty by taking out all of the clothes and inspecting the drum for traces of lint or small items. Use a damp washcloth to wipe debris from the drum.
- Choose the cycle settings
To fill the washing machine with as much water as possible, set the load amount to the highest setting. Choose a cycle with two rinse cycles, then set the water temperature to the hottest setting for both rinse cycles.
- Add the vinegar
Pour 1 cup of white vinegar into the drum. If your machine has a separate compartment for fabric softener, add 1/2 cup of vinegar to it. Turn the washing machine on.
- Let the drum dry
When the wash cycle is finished, open the machine, then use a clean washcloth to wipe the drum. You can let the machine go through another cycle if the drum smells like vinegar. Leave the door slightly open, and let the machine dry completely overnight.
