James Spader and his first wife, Victoria Kheel, divorced in 2004. Spader and Kheel met in the early 1980s, and they married in 1987. During interviews following the divorce, Spader refused to discuss the issue and the reason behind the couple's divorce is unknown.

Spader and Kheel had two sons together while they were married. These two were in addition to the child Kheel had from a previous relationship whom Spader helped to raise after he and Kheel were together.

As of 2014, Spader had been dating actress Leslie Stefanson for nearly the entire decade since his divorce from Kheel. Spader and Stefanson have one son together.
