What deworming medicine is safe for kittens?

According to The Nest, pyrantel pamoate, a deworming medicine, has few side effects and is safe for young kittens. Manufactured under various brand names, such as Nemex and Strongid, it kills roundworms and hookworms by deactivating their nervous systems.

This medication does not kill other types of worms that may infest a kitten, however. Worms that reside within the body of the mother pass through the placenta and into her kittens while they are still in the womb. The parasites can also enter the kittens through their mother's milk while nursing. To err on the side of safety, it is best to consult a veterinarian to determine the best treatment for a pet.
