Diabetic ulcers are open sores that do not heal and return repeatedly, notes Cleveland Clinic. Diabetic ulcers often occur on the feet and legs of diabetic patients. These ulcers occur due to impaired sensation in the feet and legs and normally appear pink and red, or brown and black.
Treatment for diabetic ulcers may include antibiotics for infection, topical wound care and compression stockings, according to Cleveland Clinic. Anti-clotting medication is often prescribed to prevent blood clots from forming. In some cases orthotics or prosthetics are used to enhance quality of life and function. Managing diabetes, exercising and losing weight can prevent foot and leg ulcers from occurring in many cases.
