A dialogue poem is a conversation between two characters with each character expressing a different point of view. The characters are identified by name or indicated by some other method, such as a different typeface for each character.
Each character in a dialogue poem has a distinctive voice. This voice is demonstrated by the poet through word choice and rhythm, with each character having a unique style of speaking. The poet creates tension or conflict through the opposing viewpoints of the characters. Poets have written dialogue poems throughout history. A popular topic during the Middle Ages was the debate between the body and the soul.
