Dibutyl ether is an organic compound with the molecular formula C18H8O. It belongs to a class of compounds that contains the ether functional group. It is a sweet-smelling, colorless liquid at room temperature.
The molecular mass of dibutyl ether is 130.23 grams per mole. Its boiling point is 142.4 degrees C or 288.3 degrees F. It melts at the very low temperature of -97.9 degrees C or -144.2 degrees F. It is lighter than water, but it is extremely volatile and evaporates quickly. It is insoluble in water. Dibutyl ether is mainly used as an organic solvent in chemical reactions. It must be stored away from light and heat as it has a tendency to form peroxides.
