Amerigo Vespucci explored South America on multiple voyages ending in 1504 and possibly beginning as early as 1497. According to Biography, historians disagree about whether Vespucci actually made the 1497 voyage, discovering Venezuela before Christopher Columbus.
The 1497 sailing date is in question because the only record of the voyage is a letter written under Vespucci's name, and the letter has never been proven authentic. Vespucci explored the coast of Brazil in 1499 and made subsequent voyages to South America in 1501 and 1503, returning to Portugal in 1504. It is possible that Vespucci made later voyages, but records are not definitive.
