Bob Dole ran for president of the United States in 1996. He was selected as the Republican challenger to incumbent President Bill Clinton, but he lost in the general election. Dole was also unsuccessful as the Republican vice-presidential candidate on a ticket with Gerald Ford in 1976.
When he was nominated by the Republican Party for president, Dole became the oldest first-time nominee at 73 years and 1 month. Prior to his presidential run, Dole served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1961 to 1969 and in the U.S. Senate from 1969 to 1996, where he served terms as both minority leader and majority leader.
