Boeing introduced the 787-8 Dreamliner in 2011. The Boeing 787-8 was the first variant of the 787 line to enter the market, succeeding the 767-200ER and 767300ER.

The 787-8 has a passenger capacity of 242 in a three-class configuration. It has a length of 186 feet and a wingspan of 197 feet. As of September 2015, 42 percent of 787 orders are for the 787-8, with 275 delivered.

In September 2013, Boeing introduced the 787-9 variant, an improved version of the 787-8 with a passenger capacity of 280 in a typical three-class arrangement, greater fuel efficiency due to reduced weight, and increased nautical mileage.
