The Eiffel Tower was built for the 1889 World Exhibition in Paris. The tower took over two years to build, and it was meant to last only through the World Exhibition. Gustave Eiffel, for whom the tower is named, engineered and oversaw construction of the tower.
Gustave Eiffel also worked on the Statue of Liberty, taking over construction after the previous engineer, Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, died.
When it was first built, the Eiffel Tower was disliked by residents of Paris, who believed it did not fit in with the architecture of their city. The Eiffel Tower is now one of the most recognizable symbols of Paris.
