Canada first began using postal codes for mail service in 1971. The use of postal codes was first introduced in Ottawa, Canada's capital. By 2011, Canada used approximately 834,000 postal codes.
Postal codes are designed to help the Canada Post sort mail efficiently and accurately.The Canadian postal code consists of six alphanumeric characters broken down into two groups. The three characters in the first group are a regional indicator. The composition of the first group is one letter, followed by one numeral, followed by one letter. The three characters in the second group are a local indicator. The composition of the second group is one numeral, then one letter, then one numeral.
