Rock and roll pioneer Chuck Berry served 120 days in prison during the late 1970s as a result of tax evasion chargers. This sentence also included a requirement that Berry complete 1,000 hours of community service, which he apparently took care of by performing concerts.
In June of 1979, just a day before Berry was due to appear at the court date for his tax evasion trial, he performed for President Jimmy Carter at the White House as part of a Black Music Association benefit. Berry, who was a bit notorious for his habit of evading taxes, ended up pleading guilty during his trial.
