The American colonists rebelled against the British to gain a distinctive identity as a new republican society. The revolution also helped to establish a sense of unity among the colonies and raised an issue of who would rule on the home front.

During the Revolutionary War, there was a rebellion against the trade restriction that Britain was imposing on America. There was also a conservative revolution that looked to defend the traditional liberties that were being encroached upon by the British. The war brought about a call for liberty and equality, which was addressed in the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
