DuPont, the company that developed Corian, began selling it as a countertop material in 1971. Corian was introduced that year at the International Builders Show held by the National Association of Home Builders in Houston, Texas.
Chemist Dr. Donald Slocum invented Corian in 1967 while working for DuPont; Slocum holds the patent on the material. Corian was originally intended for use in kitchen countertops, shower walls and bathroom vanities. While it was initially only produced in white, as of 2015 it is marketed in over 100 colors. Improvements to Corian since 2000 include inclusion of recycled content, translucent Corian, metallic Corian and deep-colored, scratch-resistant Corian.
