How did Earth get its name?

The planet Earth's name is a German/English word which translates to "ground." The name "Earth" is around 1,000 years old and is derived from the Old English words ertha and eor(th)e, and the German word "erde."

Earth is the only planet in the solar system capable of supporting biological life, while also providing everything needed to survive, including a sufficient, protective atmosphere. The atmosphere on Earth is made up of mostly nitrogen and oxygen and does a good job of protecting Earth and its inhabitants from the sun's deadly radiation. Earth is the fifth-largest planet in the solar system and is the third-closest planet to the sun or the center of the solar system.
