Hawaii became a state on Aug. 21, 1959. This made Hawaii the 50th state of the United States. It is the only state composed completely of islands.
The president who admitted Hawaii to join the United States was Dwight D. Eisenhower. The new national flag to reflect Hawaii's inclusion was made official on July 4, 1960. The new format of stars on the flag was five rows of six stars and four rows of five stars. The approval of Hawaii's statehood took place two months prior to it being official. Prior to Hawaii's statehood, a British explorer by the name Captain James Cook declared the Hawaii area the Sandwich Islands in 1778.
