The Holocaust started on Jan. 30, 1933 when Adolf Hitler became the chancellor of Germany. Hitler was previously the leader of the National Socialist German Workers Party, also known as the Nazi Party.
On March 20, 1933, the first concentration camp was opened outside of Munich. A boycott of Jewish-owned businesses began soon after, on April 1. The Holocaust eventually led to European involvement in World War II, beginning with the invasion of Poland on Sept. 1, 1939. Hitler eventually committed suicide on Apr. 30, 1945, which led to the surrender of Germany and the end of World War II.
