Hurricane Gustav formed in the Caribbean Sea on Aug. 25, 2008, and the last remnants of the storm dissipated over the southeastern United States on Sept. 4, 2008. The tropical wave that eventually became Gustav formed off the coast of Africa on Aug. 13, 2008.
The 2008 storm was not the first to bear the name Gustav. In fact, four other storms bore the name in 1984, 1990, 1996 and 2002. However, Hurricane Gustav of 2008 was the most damaging, causing the deaths of 162 people and creating $6.6 billion in damage across multiple Caribbean nations and the United States.
