The famous conquistador Juan Ponce de León was married just once in his life, to a woman known only as Leonor. History has forgotten many of the details of her life before her marriage to the explorer.
Leonor was the daughter of an innkeeper in Spanish-occupied Hispaniola, where de León was stationed in the early 16th century. The de León family eventually numbered six people, with Leonor bearing four children — three daughters and a son.
The couple was married sometime around 1505, and the marriage lasted around 15 years before de León's untimely death from an arrow wound to his thigh in the summer of 1521.
