What did the Karankawa Indians use for shelter?

The Karankawa people of Southeast Texas built houses out of 18-foot long willow tree saplings bent over and tied together to form a circular hut. They covered this frame with animal skins, woven grass mats or palm leaves.

The Karankawa tribe included the Capoques, Kohanis, Kopanes, Kronks and Carancaquacas bands, and they lived in the area between Galveston Bay and Corpus Christi Bay. They were nomads and migrated between the barrier islands and inland Texas. The people tattooed, pierced and painted their bodies. Their diet consisted of crabs, oysters, mussels and shellfish that they harvested from the bays' shallow waters, and nuts, berries and roots from the land.
