Karl Benz was a mechanical engineer who designed and created the first practical car powered by an internal-combustion engine, according to Biography. The first car was his three-wheeled Motorwagen that made its debut in 1885.
Benz was born in 1844 in Baden Muehlburg, Germany. He founded Benz & Company in 1883, and the company focused primarily on designing industrial engines. He then began work on a motor carriage with a four-stroke engine and successfully completed everything in 1885. Benz was given a patent on Jan. 29, 1886, for his gas-fueled automobile, and he officially began selling the vehicle to the public a few months later, in July.
