How did Kentucky get its name?

The state of Kentucky's name originated from the Wyandot word, which is defined as plain, referring to the central plains abundant in the state. The name was first recorded in 1753, yet the territory of Kentucky was not established until 1790, and Kentucky became a state in 1792.

Kentucky was originally a territory of Virginia prior to being designated as a territory and later as a state. Kentucky, also referred to as the Bluegrass State, is known for its use of the land within the central plains with tobacco farms, horse breeding and derby races. The state also features hardwood forests, lakes, caves and waterfalls.
