How did Leland Stanford donate his money?

After the death of his son, Leland Stanford set up all of his money to go to the Stanford University, which he helped create, to the miners of California and the railroad. In addition to the money Stanford gave, he donated his 8,000-acre farm to the school for the raising of horses with the stipulation that none of the land could ever be sold.
The school that Leland and his wife built in memory of their son, who died at 15, was unlike other schools of its time. Stanford allowed women from day one and did not align itself with a religious sect, which was also unique for the time period.
