The Mongols invaded Southern China in 1276. They had unified the entire country under their rule by 1279. The Mongol army was led by Kublai Khan, grandson of the great Mongol leader Genghis Khan.
Genghis Khan began raids into Northern China in 1211. After Genghis' death, Kublai took control of the Mongol forces in Northern China, while the Chinese Song Dynasty stayed in control of Southern China. In 1276, Kublai's forces captured the child emperor of the Song and named the new dynasty, the Yuan, with Kublai as its first emperor. It would take another three years for the final forces of the Song to fall to Kublai's forces.
