Montel Williams became the spokesman for MoneyMutual loans in 2009; the company has a network of 60 lenders that it gives leads from the contacts it generates and pays Williams a flat fee for each. In the past, the service has drawn criticism and was found to be illegal in New York state, as the lenders that provide loans charge rates more than 80 times the limit set by state law.

As a result of the ruling, MoneyMutual paid a 2.1 million dollar settlement, and Williams signed an agreement stating that he would not endorse the company in New York state.
