How did neon get its name?

Neon got its name from the Greek word "neos," which means new. Neon was discovered by Sir William Ramsay and Morris M. Travers not long after the duo discovered krypton.

Neon is the universe's fourth most abundant element, but only about 0.0018 percent of the atmosphere of Earth is made up of neon. Neon gas is used to make glowing signs and high-voltage indicator lights. This nonmetal gas is also combined with helium in the manufacturing of helium-neon lasers. In its liquid state, neon can be used in cryogenics, as a refrigerant. Look for neon on the periodic table, it has the atomic number of 10 and an atomic weight of 20.1797.
