What did people wear in the 1800's?

During the 1800s, men began wearing jeans and overalls, while women wore long skirts. Most people went barefoot when the weather was warm enough.

Women's clothing was more complicated in the 1800s, and it varied by class. Free women used steel hoops to make their skirts look round and full. They also had a wide array of undergarments, including petticoats, shifts and corsets. African women who were enslaved tried to wrap their heads in cloth when possible, to keep with tradition from their homeland. They also made their dresses from old flour sacks or used dresses, and they did not have the wide array of undergarments that free women used.
