According to the History Channel, the company was founded by Ferdinand Porsche in 1948 in Stuttgart, Germany. The very first prototype car built under its logo was named the Type 356 and had a rear-mounted Volkswagen engine. This hand-built aluminum-body prototype was completed in June 1948.
Automotive parts were in short supply in post-WW II Germany, so the company had to source materials wherever it could. Porsche started manufacturing its own engines in the mid-1950s, which led to the introduction of more powerful 356s. According to Porsche, its cars have won about 24,000 races all over the world to date, and some of these wins have been at the 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race.
