When did the postal service raise the price of a stamp to 39 cents?

The United States Postal Service increased the price of a standard postage stamp to 39 cents on Jan. 8, 2006. The previous rate of 37 cents had been in place since June 30, 2002. The price reflects the cost of sending a first-class letter weighing up to 1 ounce.

The USPS introduced the 'Forever Stamp' in April 2007, raising the standard postage rate to 41 cents on May 14 of the same year. The price of the stamp then underwent increases to 42, 44, 45 and 46 cents in 2008, 2009, 2012 and 2013, respectively. On Jan. 26, 2014, the first-class stamp rate was increased to 49 cents, where it remains as of August 2014.
