According to Emporia State University, no one is quite sure where quilting originated, but the earliest known quilted garment is thought to have been made around 3400 BC. Other quilted items have been found that date back to around 2 BC.
The word "quilt" originates from the Latin word "culcita," which means "stuffed sack." By the time it hit the English language, it was derived from the French word "cuilte."
Quilted clothing was popular during the Middle Ages, and the Crusaders brought the art to Europe from the Middle East. The earliest known bed quilt was made in Sicily at the end of the 14th century.
