Red Bull originated in Thailand. In 1976, Chaleo Yoovidhya developed Krating Daeng, an energy drink. The drink was successful across Asia and was noticed by Austrian entrepreneur Dietrich Mateschitz during a trip to Thailand. In 1984, he and Yoovidhya founded Red Bull GmbH and brought the drink to international markets.
Red Bull was launched in Austria in 1987, and in 1992 the company expanded to Hungary and Slovenia. It was introduced to the United States in 1997 and the Middle East in 2000. The drink sold 5.38 billion cans in 2013 and is the highest selling energy drink in the world.
