What did Robert Boyle discover?

Robert Boyle discovered and used "Boyle's Law" to explain that when a volume of gas is decreased, pressure increases in the same proportion. Using this observation, Boyle helped create the modern definition of an element. He also developed a test that aided in the differentiation of acids from bases.

Boyle's Law was first published in the second edition of his scholarly work "New Experiments Physico-Mechanicall, Touching the Spring of the Air and Its Effects," which was released in 1662. In 1660, Boyle also helped to found the Royal Society which was created to develop a view of "New Philosophy" in science.
