How did Saturn get its name?

Saturn, the sixth planet from the sun, was named after the Roman god for agriculture. In Greek mythology, the equivalent god was named Cronus, and he was the father of Zeus and Jupiter.

Every planet in the solar system, aside from Earth, is named after Greek or Roman mythology. Astronomers continued on with this trend even after these gods were no longer worshipped by modern society. Uranus, Neptune and Pluto were discovered and named in modern times.

When Saturn was first discovered, it was not evident that it had rings. Galileo deduced that the rings were actually two moons orbiting the planet.
