The Sepoy Rebellion began in Meerut, India in May 1857 and continued until it was suppressed in April 1859. During this time, the rebellion spread to Delhi, the Ganges Valley, central India and parts of Bengal.
The Sepoy Rebellion was sparked by the British troops' introduction of the Enfield rifle. To load the rifle, soldiers had to bite the end of a greased cartridge. Because Hindus feared the grease came from sacred cows and Muslims feared it came from unclean pigs, the sepoys rebelled against the British. During the Sepoy Rebellion, the sepoys murdered hundreds of Europeans. This rebellion was seen by some as the start of India's fight for independence from colonial powers.
