Texas officially gained independence from Mexico on April 21, 1836 when Texan soldiers defeated Mexican forces along the San Jacinto River. Texas had officially declared independence on March 2, 1836, initiating a series of battles with the Mexican army.
General Lopez de Santa Anna began sending Mexican troops to the border of Texas in 1835 after a series of disagreements between the Mexican government and settlers in Texas over issues of slavery, customs and citizenship. These disagreements erupted into armed conflict in early 1836, and eventually led to Texas declaring its independence from Mexico. The famous Battle of the Alamo was one of these battles.
