According to USA TODAY, the difference between isolated and scattered thunderstorms is determined by the probability of precipitation. If the chance of precipitation is less than 30 percent, then the National Weather Service forecasts isolated storms. If the chance is 30 to 50 percent, then scattered thunderstorms are the call.

Weather forecasts are determined by a variety of factors, including weather balloons, weather stations, radar and mathematical projections.Thunderstorms are caused by the rising of warm air and moisture into the atmosphere, where the warm air cools and the moisture condenses back into liquid water. Every day, the planet experiences thousands of thunderstorms.
