A California king is 4 inches longer and 4 inches thinner than a regular king mattress. The California king has been around since the 1960s.
The California king makes an ideal bed for taller people. It was developed in in California by a furniture company that wanted larger beds to incorporate into Hollywood mansions. It didn't take long for the trend to catch on and today, California beds remain popular all around the country.
Standard king-size beds provide more width for larger people or those whose kids always seem to end up in the bed. They are ideal for those with large bedrooms and are usually easier to find bed frames and sheets for than California kings.
